The cycling accessories market wasn’t all that hip 75 years ago… That is, until Blackburn was born! The Blackburn brand name was brought into existence by, Jim Blackburn.

Blackburn brought industrial design to cycling & set a new standard for the industry which meant designing from the user’s perspective and showing respect for materials and their functionality whilst also bringing about innovation.

WHY BLACKBURN?

You may or may not have heard of Blackbird. Chances are, you haven’t. Especially here in India. They’re are a new entrant to the market but have proven their worth for over 75 years in the overseas market.

On the other hand, if you have heard of them. You’ll know that they manufacture some of the best cycling accessories in the market. Blackburn manufactures and sells pumps, fenders, bags, cages, locks, mirrors, trainers, and even bar tape. Phew! That list was extensive – there’s more to that list but let’s get into what they’re really known for – their world-class lighting solutions for cyclists.

TECHNOLOGY AT BLACKBURN

What makes these lights special? Blackburn does a couple of things to ensure their lights are built to the highest standards and perform at the very best level.

1. STANDARDS

ANSI / NEMA FL-1 Guide – Nitecore Singapore
FL-1 light criteria

There aren’t many tests or requirements that lights are required to adhere to. Blackburn makes it a point to be completely transparent with their customers. All Blackburn lights are developed using FL-1 standards.

Some other brands that do not follow FL-1 often measure run time until the battery has 0% charge, despite extremely low light outputs (sometimes less than 1 lumen). The FL-1 standard requires the published run time to include only those hours and minutes where the light is useable.

2. RUGGEDNESS

Blackburn lights are thoroughly tested in all kinds of riding conditions to prove their build and go-anywhere, do-anything ability. Ingress protection rating or ‘IP Rating’, is a technical way to describe the level of water and dust proofing a product has. All Blackburn lights meet the IP-65 or IP-67 standards, to make sure they will live up to any adventure.

3. TIR LENSES

Total Internal Reflection (TIR) optics, use a refractive lens inside a reflector and have very high efficiencies in reflecting and controlling the LED’s light spread. They work in a manner that the lens directs light from the center of the emitter to the reflector, which then sends it out in a parallel controlled beam, whether narrow, wide, whatever your choice.

TIR lenses are rotationally symmetrical resulting in Total Internal Reflection. Additionally, a rounded light distribution provides better beam quality and clarity rather than having a sharply focused beam of only a small area.
