harsha on his new bmx at BumsOnTheSaddle

Harsha recently picked up a BMX from us. Not a product that we normally stock, but heck BMX bikes are kickass (remember BMX bandits?)

The BMX was at a dodgy price point – not cheap but would not put a dent on finances. A price point where quality/component compromises will be made.

Not products that we normally keep at BumsOnTheSaddle.

Issues we had with the bike

  • Replaced the housing, cables and brake shoes for better braking
  • Play in the headset which just does not seem to go
  • Rims with painted sidewall!
  • Rattling/shakey chain guard
  • Loose BB cup after a ride

BSO - cheap bicycles

Introducing the BSO – the Bike Shaped Object – a low priced, low quality bicycle (not yours Harsha)

We recently came across on an article by the Bicycle Retailer where they were debating if cheaper mass market bicycles discourage their owners from becoming cyclists?

What do we think about cheaper bikes?

If you need a quick machine which will transport you from point A to point B, relatively efficiently, any bicycles will do the job. Mostly. ‘Relatively efficiently’ being very debatable.

For us, being a cyclist means enjoying your ride. You ride to work, ride after work, cycle on weekends, get your family biking, cycling holidays, local bike shops and your local community are a big deal, you train for club races and passionately plunge into heated armchair debates on your local forums.

Maybe occasionally shave your legs if you are the spandex kinds.

Dont think BSO’s really get any of these reactions!

And to experience this wonderful wonderful world – you need to jump into into headfirst.

One day Harsha, one day –
