Fun Sustainable Transport

a Bicycle is faster

bike-vs-car-vs-transit – annual Commuter Challenge to figure out which is the fastest and cheapest mode of transport. In New York.

Rushi a biker recently posted this video on our group, BangaloreBikers to see if anyone was interested in doing the same in Bangalore. Looks like we will have a similar video sometime soon.

One of the most surprising aspects of commuting on a bicycle is that you reach your destination faster !
Quite a few customers at BumsOnTheSaddle commute on bicycle and the bicycle has consistently been quicker compared to their cars or at the least take the same time compared to their motorbikes. (AND they have a lot of fun while commuting on the bicycle)

The advantages are huge
  • get to your destination faster
  • get healthy at the same time
  • commute time takes care of exercise time (multi-task)
  • environment friendly
  • economical. A good bike might cost you heven and earth, but you are saving on gym fees, petrol bills, car servicing and the future liposuction and angioplasty. It is a good deal.
  • its loads of fun
  • biking is very relaxing. You get to work and back home a little more relaxed compared to other means of transport
  • you are a role model – believe it. You are much better than the non-bikers around you :). Be proud of the fact and spread the good word. If amway can, why cant you ?
There are always questions
  • Pollution ?
  • Biker Safety ?
  • Bike safety ?
  • No Shower at office !
  • etc etc
But most of these have work arounds.
Speak to us, we would be able to offer some advice on this.

Hey Rohan, I'm in California at the moment - I ride a Specialized Rockhopper off-road in the mountains here, and sometimes on-road just for exercise. I'm SO looking forward to being back home in Bangalore, and plan to cycle as much as possible. My only question is about pollution. What's the workaround for that one? Especially during the evening rush hour when everything's stalled and the fumes are swirling... and as a cyclist it's even worse because you're breathing deeply. It's so nice to see that you aren't just selling cycles, but are pushing for change. More power to you!

    Hey Gautam,
nice. The Rockhopper is an awesome bike.
Its not very apparent, but Bangalore is pretty polluted. I have started wearing pollution masks while commuting - http://blog.bumsonthesaddle.com/2007/3/16/mask-of-sorrow Have to solve this issue !

Oh ya. Selling cycles is secondary. :) We started this mainly cause other folks were doing a pathetic job of pushing bikes in Bangalore :) Thank you for stopping by and saying nice things :)

Dear Rohan, I used to cycle during my college days for my regular use and as a hobby used to go on long rides (about 50 to 100 kms) in the sports cycle (schwinn, France). Now Iam 37 and want to start with my cycle hobby again for week end long rides, my question is what type of cycle can I use, are the MTB's tougher to ride than the sports cycles?, Kindly suggest, my weight is 80kgs and which would be the economical and comfertable bike to start with.

  • ROhan Kini on 24 Jun 17:26

    Saravanan - would suggest a Trek 4300

Anuj - I used to bike for a year without a shower. I used to bike a lot slower :) so that I dont sweat as much.
